A life altering experience

kelly3

There’s nothing quite like a first time—the first love, the first job, the first big win, the first big heartbreak. Our first trip to the Maasai Girls Rescue Center (MGRC) was one of those unforgettable firsts, a life altering experience. This life altering experience opened my eyes to new perspectives.

We weren’t sure what to expect when we arrived. Would the girls we sponsor recognize us? Would they want to get to know us? Would they welcome strangers into their world? We knew meeting them would be meaningful, but we were completely unprepared for the overwhelming love, acceptance, and gratitude that greeted us. From our girls—and from all the girls—we felt pure joy and connection. We’ll never forget our visit to MGRC in October 2025 and can’t wait to return.

Tanzanian schools are eye opening… for the wrong reasons

Getting the chance to see where the girls go to school was sobering. Their school rooms are very small and overcrowded, with the some of the students having to share seats. The classrooms are barren of books and other the basic learning tools, not to mention computerized learning aids and technology. To say I was shocked is an understatement. But the girls want to learn…they are motivated and enthusiastic despite less-than-ideal conditions.

A computer lab is within reach

That’s why this year’s holiday campaign excites me so much: it’s laser- focused on education, and one of the key goals is building a full computer learning lab at MGRC. I’ve seen the pilot program in action— helping the girls improve their math and language skills. A full lab will give the girls a huge leg up, allowing them to learn at their own speed and to explore subjects that would otherwise not be available to them.

I’ve seen firsthand what the amazing MGRC sponsors, donors, and volunteers have done so far.  Together, we can make this lab happen…and I cannot think of a more worthy group!  It is hard to describe the depth of the girls’ love and their hearts overflow with appreciation.

My heart will never be the same

Being a part of this amazing ministry fills my heart with joy.  Visiting the center and meeting the girls has opened my eyes to just how important MGRC is to helping break the cycle of poverty and protecting the girls from early marriage and FGM. Here the most at risk Maasai girls are thriving, personally, emotionally, spiritually and professionally.  Hope truly radiates from the village.

For years, I’ve heard and read about the good work being done at MGRC but seeing it in person changed everything for me.  Our visit was a life altering experience I will never forget, and I hope everyone has the chance to experience a life altering experience, too.
