Nearly 40 people came together April 26th for the inaugural Maasai Girls Rescue Center Raleigh Hub. Hosted by MGRC Board members, Greg Scheu and Mary Flieller, the group enjoyed socializing prior to hearing from Founder, Rick Morro and Board Chairman, Bruce Hammond. Rick described some of the challenges faced by the girls and their inspiring progress to date. He also shared some his failures, lessons learned and successes as he gradually identified a sustainable model to help the girls achieve financial independence.

Through examples of the fully functioning ecoFarm, community involvement and government cooperation, Bruce emphasized the goal of MGRC is to solve a problem, not create a charity. “My goal is to work myself out of a job”. The ecoVillage strategy was shared along with priorities of raising funds for the multi-purpose room and girls’ homes. The evening ended with a thought-provoking Q&A session and further socializing.

The Maasai Girls Rescue Center, Inc. is a nonprofit, tax-exempt Section 501(c)(3) charitable organization. MGRC was founded in 2012 and does its primary work in the Karatu District of Tanzania. Built on an entrepreneurial approach, MGRC transforms the lives of at-risk women with financial independence and the right to self-determination.
