July was a joyful and full month at the Maasai Girls Rescue Center. Between birthday celebrations, the return to school, a meaningful field trip into town, and continued progress on the farm, we saw so many reminders of why this work matters.

A Month Full of Birthdays

Fourteen of our girls celebrated birthdays in July—twelve at the Center and two in boarding school. The Center girls included Honest, Happiness, Neyosu, Anna, Flora, Simaloi, Nayari, Upendo, Sarah, Victoria, Rose, and Tabitha. Upendo and Namyaki received phone calls and birthday wishes while away at school.

These celebrations continue to mean so much. Many of our girls arrived without knowing their exact birth dates or ever having marked the day. Now the little ones carefully track their new ages and can name their birthday mates. Some even ask early in the month when the party will be. Watching the older girls mark these milestones helps younger girls be aware of their own
growing independence and builds a sense of belonging and value that many never experienced before.

Cake, Games, and Shared Joy

The girls themselves made three large cakes for their birthdays. They chose vanilla with blue, yellow, and pink decorations, then shared the cakes with everyone along with cookies and ice cream. Before the main celebration, the non-birthday girls playfully chased the birthday girls and splashed light water drops like gentle rain. The main events—singing and dancing birthday songs, then cutting the cake—filled the room with laughter and energy. These simple traditions create lasting memories and reinforce that each girl is seen and celebrated.

Exploring Our Community

Recently the girls took a field trip into town to learn more about the surrounding community and the various services available. It was wonderful to see how excited they were to experience a new environment and how eager they were to learn about town facilities.

During the trip they asked to visit and learn about several important businesses and public places,
including:

• Hospitals and pharmacies for healthcare needs
• Bus stations for travel and transportation
• Banks and the main market for financial and daily shopping activities
• Local maize flour grinding machines for everyday food preparation
• Courts and police stations to understand legal and community safety services
• TANESCO (Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited) to learn about utility services
• Street vendors to observe local trade and small businesses

This kind of exposure is vital for their development. As they grow older, experiencing and understanding these community businesses and resources will equip them with the practical knowledge and confidence they need to access services independently in their daily lives.

Strawberry Plants Update

On the farm, the strawberry plants that were added as part of the Learn and Earn Summer Program continue to grow. A few plants have already started producing fruit—a small but encouraging sign. The girls who were part of the Learn and Earn Farm team are so proud that their project is starting to yield results. One of the program’s goals was encourage the girls to take ownership of their future by contributing to the continued success of the ecoVillage. Their work and research resulted in the addition of strawberries to the growing crop production.

Hopefully, strawberry shortcake will be on the menu coming soon!

Back to School and Looking Ahead

School is back in full swing. The girls are busy with their studies, and we provide daily close supervision for homework before bedtime. Our baking school students have also returned and are on track to finish in October. A special milestone is in the offing: on September 10th, our 12 Grade 7 girls will graduate from primary school. We are so proud of their hard work and the progress they continue to make.

July reminded us once again that rescue is only the beginning. Restoration happens in the everyday moments: a remembered birthday, a shared cake, a curious trek through town, focused study time, and the first sweet strawberries of the season.
