When are fun and games MORE than fun and games?

Learning takes many forms. And when you can combine learning with fun and games, everyone wins. Competitive sports offer that perfect combination, and they are an important part of the girls’ development. The joy of winning, resilience after loss, and the value of teamwork prepare them for their independent lives when the leave MGRC.

About every two months we get together with nearby schools and other NGOs to give the girls the opportunity to test their skills in a variety of sports and games. Recently twenty of our girls traveled to the Rift Valley Children’s Village, another children’s center for a day of friendly fun and games!

The girls competed in a wide variety of activities, including football, volleyball, athletics, netball, foot races, musical chairs, hunting balloons, sack races and hula hoops. It was a thrilling day of fun and games, and our girls truly shined! A few special highlights include:

  • Sayuni was recognized as the best footballer of the day and was rewarded with juice and biscuits!
  • Bahati Arusha and Evodia Paschal proved to be our top athletes, winning rewards as the best runners.
  • Sarah Lemkana brought the energy and was named the best musical chairs dancer.
  • Joyce Kinani showed incredible skill and was rewarded as the best ring player.
  • Tabitha used her quick reflexes to win the prize as the best balloon hunter.

Beyond the trophies and treats, everyone had a wonderful time and was incredibly happy to make the journey. Because the Rift Valley Children’s Village is nestled away in a beautiful, remote area, the journey itself allowed the girls to experience the natural beauty of their own country. Anyone who has travelled outside their normal domain can appreciate the girls’ feeling of awe, excitement. Interacting with others and seeing how other children live and interact helped the girls build a beautiful sense of friendship and community.
