Seven of our girls are still in need of sponsors. From extreme poverty to escaping child marriage, each of these girls has a unique story. By becoming a child sponsor, you’re not just providing financial support, you’re offering a lifeline to a child in need. Career guidance

Recently professors from Kisangara Institute of Social Work came and spoke to a group of our older girls. Our intern, Blandina, is studying at the school and her professor came to MGRC for her evaluation. Excited by MGRC’s mission, he volunteered to come back and give career guidance to our girls. Two girls had the opportunity to share their talents with the visiting professors: Esupat showed her bead work and Maria demonstrated her artistic skill.

From disabilities to dreams

Upendo is a 17 year old resident with albinism and, as a result, a severe vision impairment. Her visual limitations were affecting her education. Fortunately, we found a school that provides appropriate accommodations for her disability and lessons in braille. This private school is over seven hours from MGRC, so she is boarding there. Recently, a group of teachers from her school were visiting the Ngorogoro Crater and came to visit MGRC. They were so impressed with the work being done at MGRC that they said they got more out of visiting us than visiting the Crater.

Farm to Table: The girls of MGRC learn self-sufficiency

The ecoFarm continues to be a huge success and a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit that drives MGRC. Four pigs just gave birth to 27 piglets that are already growing rapidly. In 6-9 months we will be able to fill our freezers with enough pork to feed over 70 girls, plus staff members. In addition, the great amount of rainfall this year, along with ample fertilization provided by our resident cows, has blessed us with larger vegetables than we have ever seen! The girls enjoyed helping with this huge harvest!

Though there is plenty of time for play on the weekends, the girls of MGRC have chores to do. We believe that giving the girls responsibilities is an important part of preparing them for the future. They rotate through a series of age-appropriate chores such as sweeping the playground, pulling weeds and helping with the laundry. They also are learning important skills like baking, cooking and caring for animals. The girls feel a sense of pride in caring for their home, and are excited to learn the skills that will help them find jobs and be self-sufficient in the future.
