On December 18, Maasai Girls Rescue Center hosted our first annual Community Thanks celebration. Over 200 people gathered on the land that will become our ecoVillage. It was a wonderful time to show the girls’ families the progress we’ve made in our new location, and also a chance to thank our new community for their support.
Over 70 family members came on a bus we provided, and were able to stay through breakfast the next morning. I think it’s very important to maintain a connection between the girls and their biological families whenever possible. We want to encourage them to stay connected to their culture and relationships. As our girls learn and grow into adulthood, we believe they will be well-positioned in becoming difference makers in their families and in their communities.
Several of the girls stood up in front over 200 people and shared their testimonies and expressed their heartfelt gratitude to MGRC and staff. Many were moved to tears while sharing the positive impact Maasai Girls Rescue Center has made in their lives. In a rare and emotional moment, a mother stood up and spoke for over 30 minutes. She described how MGRC is keeping her daughter safe from a miserable life after being forced to marry at 9 years old.
2021 was a year of significant progress, change and hope for MGRC. Our girls have overcome many challenges in their lives and education. They are all doing remarkably well. Truly a combined effort between them, their teachers, house mothers and tutors. I can’t put into words how thankful I am for all the hardwork from our staff, volunteers, local community leaders, and supporters who are creating a brighter future for these girls. ➡️ Click here to view all the photos and videos from the celebration.
